Do you have a sandwich toaster/griller at home? You know, the one that inspired you to construct the most experimental sandwiches in the first week you had it, but now you only use it to make the occasional grilled cheese. But, those lovely grill marks still make you feel like you make the fanciest grilled cheese sandwiches ever. What if we told you – you can put that sandwich maker to work, and make whole host of other fancy-feeling-inducing things on it?

Not kidding. From skewers to steaks, you can cook your dinner entirely on your sandwich toaster – and it doesn’t have to be a sandwich! Here are some of our favourite things to make on one.

1. Lamb Skewers

We all love skewers, but sometimes, the thought of firing up the grill just to cook a few skewers of meat doesn’t seem like the most appealing idea – especially on a week night, when you have that random mid-week craving for something exotic. Just make sure the pieces of meat aren’t too big or chunky, and essentially of similar size. And voila! A few minutes later, you’ll have lamb skewers!

2. Burger Patties

Home-made burgers are da bomb! We love that we can customize them any way they want. Our favourite recipe includes minced lamb/chicken, diced onions, and some spices for a lovely kick. And our new favourite way to cook these? You guessed it. Our trust sandwich toaster. It does the job twice as fast, since the meat is getting heated from the top and the bottom!

3. Fish fillets

It’s really simple to cook boneless cuts of meat in a sandwich toaster – and that include fish fillets. Especially, oily fish like Salmon, Trout, and Mackerel that can hold together on their own. Season with salt, pepper, and squeeze a dash of lemon once done – and you have yourself a meal cooked in less than 10 minutes! Cooking fish in a sandwich maker shouldn’t take you longer than 4-6 minutes depending on the thickness of the fish.

4. Chicken Breast

The best way to make sure your chicken breast cooks through in your sandwich maker, is to lightly pound it so you get a piece that is uniformly thick. Next, either marinate it in spices, or use a dry rub to get some flavour in there, and put it in a pre-heated sandwich maker. 4-6 minutes later, you’ll have grilled chicken for dinner!

The sandwich-maker grilling works great for people who need to cook single-friendly meals. It’s quick, cheap, environment-friendly, and less messy. A few tips before you start cooking in your sandwich maker:

  • Make sure your sandwich maker is thoroughly clean. Once you’re done cooking, let it cool down, and clean between the grooves with mild soap, warm water, and a soft cloth.
  • Grease your sandwich maker lightly, and pre-heat it before you place the meat on. It is recommended to rub some oil on to the meat as well.
  • Once you close the lid, check your meat after about 4 minutes for doneness and then decide if it needs more cooking. Each brand might give different degrees of heat, so keep that in mind.
